Words of Wisdom
(favorite quotes from athletes & coaches)
It’s great fun interviewing and writing about ski team athletes,
rising stars and the coaches who help them along the way. Here are some
of the more notable quotes regarding thinking in the long term, developing
all facets of athletic abilities, training the mind and having fun along
the way.
ERIK DAVIS, A YOUNGSTER FROM SUMMIT SKI TEAM IN COLORADO, HAD A SOLID
VISION OF WHERE HE WANTS TO BE IN THE FUTURE:
"Ever since I’ve been little, I’ve always wanted to be
the best ski racer in the world. When I look into the future, I can see
myself on top of a world championship podium and hear the American National
Anthem playing".
ERIC DEFINITELY KNOWS WHERE HE’S HEADED!
U.S. SKI TEAM MEMBER SARAH SCHLEPER WORE US OUT JUST TALKING ABOUT HOW
SHE TRAINS TO DEVELOP ALL FACETS OF ATHLETIC ABILITY:
"I do lots of running, hiking, biking, core strengthening, quickness,
strength, plyometrics, skating, waterskiing and trampolining. I have the
ability to make training very fun. I set obstacle courses through my yard.
I do intervals on my trampoline".
ON THE SUBJECT OF TRAINING THE MIND AND PATIENCE, MARTY HARRIS, THE YOUNG
STAR FROM HEAVENLY, CALIFORNIA, HAD THIS TO SAY:
"Ski racing has taught me a lot of patience, because it’s a
lot of stop-and-go with the weather and everything".
ACE TARBERRY, A J II FROM ATTITASH, NEW HAMPSHIRE, EMPHASIZED THE IMPORTANCE
OF PATIENCE, TOO:
"Be patient with a good line,
and stay with it".
WHAT A WISE YOUNG MAN. WE COACHES ARE ALWAYS SAYING THE EXACT SAME THING
TO ENERGETIC YOUNG ATHLETES WHO TEND TO JUMP INTO TURNS TOO SOON!
USST ATHLETE ERIK SCHLOPY’S SAGE ADVICE ON PATIENCE:
"Be patient with results,
but impatient with gaining knowledge".
